Basic Decorating PrinciplesThere are many different definitions of decorating but most people agree that to do it yourself, home improvements involve finding just the right combination of colors and textures to make a room interesting and pleasant to spend time in. Balance is Key - Plan on using both large and small textures and patterns as well as a combination of light and dark to create that eye pleasing blend that is just "perfect". Colour and More Colour - Unless you are planning to sell your home, go with warm and inviting but soft colors in each room. Care must be taken select neutral colors if selling because most new owners will repaint within the first year and the fact that whites and other neutrals make the rooms look bigger. Express Yourself. - Create a look that reflects your style and taste. It is your home and it should reflect you. Select only the combinations that you really like. Remember, you will be looking at them for several years to come. There is nothing worse than spending good money on something you weren't sure about and then to decide a year or two later that you need to change. Reuse Your Possessions - Take all of those great things that you love and find a place for them in your new decor. Plan your design to incorporate the things your truly cherish. Put your favorites things on display and build the decor around them. Make Incremental Changes - If possible do smaller projects first. Of course, some changes are such a mess and inconvenience you want to get the whole thing done in one shot. But when possible, change a little bit at a time. That way you can decide what you really like and don't like before making any major commitments with your time and money. Pay Attention To Detail - Details can make all the difference. It is the little inconveniences that drive us to distraction. No matter what you decide, make sure nothing is going to cause any inconvenience in your everyday routine and habits. |
